By: Gerald P. Koocher, Patricia Keith-Spiegel. Most mental health professionals and behavioral scientists enter the field with a strong desire to help others, but clinical practice and research endeavors often involve decision-making in the context of ethical ambiguity. Good intentions are important, but unfortunately, they do not always protect the practitioner and client from breaches in ethical conduct. Academics, researchers, and students also face a range of ethical challenges from the classroom to the laboratory. Now in a new expanded edition, Ethics in Psychology and the Mental Health Professions, the most widely read and cited ethics textbook in psychology, has emerged with a broadened scope extending across the mental health and behavioral science fields. The revised volume considers many of the ethical questions and dilemmas that mental health professionals encounter in their everyday practice, research, and teaching. The book has been completely updated and is now also relevant for counselors, marriage and family therapists, social workers, and psychiatrists, and includes the ethics codes of those groups as appendices. Providing both a critical assessment and elucidation of key topics in the APA's guidelines, this comprehensive volume takes a practical approach to ethics and offers constructive means for both preventing problems, recognizing, approaching, and resolving ethical predicaments. Written in a highly readable and accessible style, this new edition retains the key features which have contributed to its popularity, including hundreds of case studies that provide illustrative guidance on a wide variety of topics, including fee setting, advertising for clients, research ethics, sexual attraction, how to confront observed unethical conduct in others, and confidentiality, among others. By: Deborah Fish Ragin. Health Psychology: An Interdisciplinary Approach offers a critical examination of the biopsychosocial model of health and proposes the use of the ecological model as a more comprehensive explanation of health outcomes; both of which are unique approaches in a health psychology text.
The ecological model explores the impact of five systems on individual health outcomes: the individual (including physiology), the family/community, physical and social environments, healthcare systems and health policy. Unlike the biopsychological model which represents a combination of three fields—biology, psychology and sociology - the ecological model includes research and findings from medical anthropology, economics, ethnopharmacology, environmental studies, medicine and public health, in addition to biology, psychology and sociology. Thus, it offers a truly interdisciplinary approach to the study of health. Finally, the text uniquely examines infectious diseases and chronic illnesses from a local, regional and global perspective. The diverse perspectives illustrate the roles of each of the five systems on health. Book Title: Health Psychology: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Health. Author: Deborah Fish Ragin. | Speaker: Deborah Fish Ragin Master Teacher: Nancy Simpson Politics and health may seem like an unlikely pair. Yet, a brief glance into history shows us that public policies contribute mightily to individual health outcomes. Early examples of this relationship are found in the development of public and private sanitation systems in the Indus Valley region in 2000 BCE, the development of public water systems in ancient Greece and later Rome, and in public health studies of the relationship between sewer systems and fevers in England in the mid-1800s. Dr. Ragin's webinar presentation will take us on a brief journey through the history and research that demonstrates the clear relationship between the two, culminating in an examination of the research on current health policies in the US and abroad that have direct influence on individual health status. This body of work will be explained in the context of the current socio-ecological model of health that views health outcomes as a dynamic process resulting from the interaction of biology, human behavior, physical and social environments, health systems and health policy. | |

| This program exists to give students at Augusta State University the opportunity to have a profound experience learning about health psychology while studying abroad in Cusco, Peru. While abroad, students participating in this program work closely with a women's clinic devoted to helping reduce the rate of cervical cancer in the region. Some women walk as long as 15 hours just to get checked out at this clinic. It is a pretty rewarding program to be a part of. Students who have chosen to be a part of this program before have also had the opportunity to learn some Spanish, relax with some yoga, dance salsa style, visit some ancient Inca ruins sites, and create a lot of last memories.
