By: Steven M. Kaplan. Wiley's English-Spanish, Spanish-English Dictionary of Psychology and Psychiatry is the only book of its kind. It provides concise, comprehensive, and current coverage of virtually every word or phrase used in the study and practice of psychiatry and psychology. This unique and useful resource contains more than 62,000 entries—30,000 plus in each language—covering all disciplines and subdisciplines, both research and clinical. The equivalents provided are designed to be understood by a majority of fluent speakers, especially those trained in these fields. This dictionary's extremely user-friendly format directs you instantly to the precise equivalent you need without first "rerouting" you through a maze of other irrelevant terms and phrases. Gender-neutral equivalents are provided, and in cases where the gender-specific term is the norm, both are given. For idiomatic expressions, conceptual equivalents are provided rather than literal translations. Phrases that begin with the same word or words are provided as separate entries, and the same is true for words that serve more than one grammatical function (e.g., articulate). This indispensable tool encourages and facilitates the sharing of ideas across linguistic, cultural, and international boundaries. For psychiatrists, psychologists, students, translators, and interpreters who need quick, easy access to equivalent terms in Spanish and English, there is simply no other source. With more than three times as many defined entries, biographies, illustrations, and appendices than any other dictionary of psychology ever printed in the English language, Raymond Corsini's Dictionary of Psychology is indeed a landmark resource. | DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Self-consciousness is an acute sense of self-awareness. It is a preoccupation with oneself, as opposed to the philosophical state of self-awareness, which is the awareness that one exists as an individual being; although some writers use both terms interchangeably or synonymously. An unpleasant feeling of self-consciousness may occur when one realizes that one is being watched or observed, the feeling that "everyone is looking" at oneself. Some people are habitually more self-conscious than others. Unpleasant feelings of self-consciousness are sometimes associated with shyness or paranoia. According to Schopenhauer, man can, through self-consciousness, make a choice between affirming or denying the will. When feeling self-conscious, one becomes aware of even the smallest of one's own actions. Such awareness can impair one's ability to perform complex actions. For example, a musician may "choke", lose confidence, and even lose the ability to perform at the moment they notice the audience. This is a function of the psychological phenomenon of social facilitation. As self-consciousness fades one may regain the ability to "lose one's self". Adolescence is believed to be a time of heightened self-consciousness. A person with a chronic tendency toward self-consciousness may be shy or introverted. Unlike self-awareness, which in a philosophical context is being conscious of oneself as an individual, self-consciousness, being excessively ... | This is my final project for my social and personality development class. The assignment was to pick a topic relating to the class and create something to make a recommendation to parents as though we are professional developmental psychologists. The words are color coded, which I hope is obvious. The red words are dictionary definitions. The white words are my commentary as the psychologist. The blue words (the majority of the text) are written as though I was talking directly to someone to help clarify the speech. I wasn't exactly sure how to handle the references, so I piled them all up at the end. Since I didn't cite any specific information other than dictionary definitions, which I just realized I left off the reference list, I didn't put any specific references in the images. Plus, it's a speech with visuals, so I don't know how I could have injected them. | |

| Hatred... Philosophical views: Philosophers have offered many influential definitions of hatred. Rene Descartes viewed hate as an awareness that something is bad, combined with an urge to withdraw from it. Baruch Spinoza defined hate as a type of pain that is due to an external cause. Aristotle viewed hate as a desire for the annihilation of an object that is incurable by time. Finally, David Hume believed that hate is an irreducible feeling that is not definable at all. Black Eyed Peas...www.blackeyedpeas.com Psychological views: In psychology, Sigmund Freud defined hate as an ego state that wishes to destroy the source of its unhappiness. In a more contemporary definition, the Penguin Dictionary of Psychology defines hate as a "deep, enduring, intense emotion expressing animosity, anger, and hostility towards a person, group, or object." Because hatred is believed to be long-lasting, many psychologists consider it to be more of an attitude or disposition than a (temporary) emotional state.
