| From the season five episode "The One Where Phoebe Hates PBS". In it the characters debate psychological egoism. ------------------------------------------------ Psychological egoism is about as dead as a philosophical theory can get. It is a good example of a bit of progress philosophers have made. "Can we act selflessly?" Turns out, the answer is: "Yes." However, arguments like Joey's for psychological egoism (ie that we can only act selfishly) often strike non-professionals as convincing. There are a number of fatal flaws philosophers have identified with psychological egoism. Can you tell one of the ways the position Joey is arguing for goes wrong? Here is one site that covers some of the problems that philosophers have found with psychological egoism well: philosophy.lander.edu ------------------------------------------------ There is an important distinction to keep in mind when watching this video (Joey is defending the first of the two): Psychological egoism: We cannot act selflessly. Every action is selfish. Ethical egoism: We can act selflessly, but we shouldn't. We should act selfishly. Often people mistakenly argue for ethical egoism on the basis of psychological egoism (But Joey isn't in this clip). However, far from supporting one another, they cannot both be true. If psychological egoism is true and one cannot avoid acting selfishly, then ethical egoism cannot say we should act selfishly. After all, that would entail that we *could* act selflessly, only ... | |

| I made this video for my psychology class's end of the year project. Me and my buddy alex were partners and chose the topic Paranoid Schizophrenia. Clips used from various music videos. Music by: Ólafur Arnalds -Himininn Er Ao Hrynja, en Stjornurnar Fara Per Vel -3055 Done in 19 hours(straight!) off a strict diet of Starbucks, dark chocolate, annnnd goldfish crackers. o.0 ----------------------------------------------------------- COMMENTS: Due to a lot of unwanted comments, I have changed my settings to only allow comments after my approval. I am not a doctor, I cannot solve your condition, and I do not respond to suicidal threats or anything related to those negative topics. This was an informative Psychology project for my class, that is all it is. It cannot treat you, make you better, make you worse, and it is not the intro to a forum for talking about the condition in extremely negative ways. I accept all comments regarding coping, questions, extra information for others..etc. Thank you for understanding. -Kelly | |

| 1954 www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Escapism is mental diversion by means of entertainment or recreation, as an "escape" from the perceived unpleasant or banal aspects of daily life. It can also be used as a term to define the actions people take to help relieve persisting feelings of depression or general sadness. People believe that this diversion is more inherent in today's urban, technological existence because it removes people from their biologically normal natures. Entire industries have sprung up to foster a growing tendency of people to remove themselves from the rigors of daily life. Many activities that are normal parts of a healthy existence (eg, eating, sleeping, exercise, sexual activity) can also become avenues of escapism when taken to extreme. In the context of being taken to an extreme, the word "escapism" carries a negative connotation, suggesting that escapists are unhappy, with an inability or unwillingness to connect meaningfully with the world. However, there are some who challenge the idea that escapism is fundamentally and exclusively negative. For instance, JRR Tolkien, responding to the Anglo-Saxon academic debate on escapism in the 1930s, wrote in his essay "On Fairy-Stories" that escapism had an element of emancipation in its attempt to figure a different reality. CS Lewis was also fond of humorously remarking that the usual enemies of escape were jailers. Some social critics warn of attempts by the powers that control society to ... |
